Recovery Position

  • The recovery position is used to help maintain an open airway and prevent aspiration in an unconscious but breathing person.

Steps to Place Someone in the Recovery Position:

    1. Position the Arm Nearest to You – Extend their closest arm at a right angle to their body with the palm facing upward.

    2. Position the Far Arm and Leg –

      • Take their far arm and place the back of their hand against their cheek (the side facing you).

      • Bend their far knee so the foot is flat on the ground.

    3. Roll Them Onto Their Side – Gently pull on the bent knee to roll them toward you. Ensure their head tilts slightly downward to allow fluids to drain from the mouth.

    4. Adjust the Head and Chin – Tilt the head back slightly to keep the airway open.

    5. Monitor Breathing – Stay with the person and check their breathing regularly until help arrives.

This position reduces the risk of choking on vomit or fluids while maintaining an open airway.
